The campaign of the Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris, has launched a new ad aimed at undecided Latino voters. The ad, titled 'Real Heroes' in English and 'Nuestra Democracia' in Spanish, focuses on recalling the attack on the Capitol in January 2021 through the voice of Aquilino Gonell, a former Capitol Police sergeant of Dominican descent, who was injured during the insurrection.
In the ad, Gonell criticizes the Republican candidate and former president, Donald Trump, for calling those who participated in the Capitol assault 'patriots.' According to Gonell, Trump did not take seriously the oath to protect democracy, unlike him and other police officers. Gonell urges the community to defend democracy with their vote.
Harris's campaign emphasized that the ad seeks to remind Latino voters of Trump's rhetoric regarding the Capitol attack, a fundamental institution for democracy in the U.S. Trump has described January 6 as a 'day of love' and has hinted at severe consequences should he lose the election, which has been interpreted as a threat to democracy by the Democratic campaign.
This ad is part of an intensive advertising campaign by Harris, with an investment of $370 million in television, radio, and digital media, aimed at winning Latino votes. Latino voters are key in states like Arizona, Nevada, and Georgia, becoming an important target for both candidates.
